COALITION GOVERNMENT TO UNDERTAKE CHILDCARE INQUIRY

An inquiry would investigate the childcare needs of rural and regional parents if the Coalition is elected according to The Nationals Member for Gippsland Darren Chester.

Mr Chester has welcomed the announcement by the Coalition that a proposed Productivity Commission inquiry would focus on making sure that childcare was more accessible, affordable and flexible for parents.

He said the terms of reference for the inquiry included consideration of ‘the particular needs of rural, regional or remote parents’.

OCCASIONAL CHILDCARE REINSTATED IN GIPPSLAND

Occasional childcare places will be restored in Heyfield, Maffra, Yarram, Paynesville Swifts Creek and Mallacoota after a long-running community campaign.

Federal Member for Gippsland Darren Chester, who supported the affected communities in their campaign to have services restored, said the commitment by the Gillard Government is long-overdue.

The communities lost occasional childcare when the ‘Take a Break’ program, a joint funding agreement between the Federal and State Governments, ceased last year.

YARRAM HUB FUNDING BREAKTHROUGH WELCOMED

Federal Member for Gippsland Darren Chester has welcomed a State Government funding breakthrough that will allow for the construction of the Yarram Childcare Hub.

Mr Chester said the $1.1 million announcement would provide a boost for Yarram.

“The project is critical to local families and the community’s ability to prosper and I commend Member for Gippsland South Peter Ryan and the State Government on providing such valuable support for the project,” Mr Chester said.

CHESTER SUPPORTS MAFFRA KINDERGARTEN PROJECT

Glassford Street Kindergarten in Maffra has applied for funding to build a new room so it can run three-year-old and four-year-old kindergarten simultaneously.

The kindergarten in partnership with Wellington Shire Council has lodged an application for $300,000 from the State Government.

The Nationals Member for Gippsland Darren Chester has lent his support to the project and this week met with some of the families who would benefit from the upgrade.

COMMUNITY HUB DESERVES FEDERAL SUPPORT: CHESTER

The Nationals Member for Gippsland Darren Chester has called on the Gillard Government to redeem itself and provide funding for childcare services in Yarram, during the February sitting of Federal Parliament.

Mr Chester told Parliament the Yarram community hub childcare centre had bipartisan support leading into the 2007 election but the funding has still not eventuated.

“Given this government’s track record in relation to broken promises, I should not be so surprised,” Mr Chester said.
