BOWEL CANCER SCREENING PROGRAM EXTENDED

The National Bowel Cancer Screening Program will expand to include Gippslanders turning 60 in 2013 according to The Nationals Member for Gippsland Darren Chester.

Previously the program only invited local residents aged 50, 55 and 65 years old to participate but a $50 million investment by the Federal Government is expanding the program to more people.

Mr Chester said the screening program helped to detect bowel cancer and dangerous pre-cancerous lesions.

STATE LABOR SUPPORT CUTS TO EAST GIPPSLAND HOSPITALS

State Labor’s support for the Federal Government’s removal of $750,000 from East Gippsland hospitals has been slammed by local MP’s Tim Bull and Darren Chester.

If distributed pro-rata, the cuts will see funding of $640,000 for Bairnsdale Regional Health Service, $84,000 for Orbost Regional Health and $23,000 for Omeo District Health Service removed as part of a broader $3.68 million health service funding cut across Gippsland.

Last week in State Parliament, Eastern Victoria Upper House Members Matt Viney and Johan Scheffer voted against a motion expressing concern at the cuts.

LABOR CUTS $3.68 MILLION FROM GIPPSLAND HOSPITALS

The Gillard Labor Government is slashing $3.68 million from Gippsland health services in an attempt to achieve a surplus according to The Nationals Member for Gippsland Darren Chester.

Mr Chester said the cuts, which have been made across the 2011-12 and 2012-13 financial years, have the potential to negatively impact on health services offered to the community.

He said a total of $1.6 billion in funding was being cut across the nation.

REGIONAL HOSPITAL FUND NEEDED: CHESTER

The need for a dedicated regional hospital fund has been put on the agenda in Federal Parliament by The Nationals Member for Gippsland Darren Chester.

Speaking in Parliament last night, Mr Chester said there were a number of hospitals located throughout regional Australia searching for avenues of funding to support critical developments and associated capital works.

He said one example was Latrobe Regional Hospital (LRH) which missed out on funding for a $65 million redevelopment through the now-closed Regional Priority Round of the Health and Hospital’s Fund (HHF).

CENTENARY HOUSE EXPANSION OFFICIALLY OPENED

November 23, 2012

A $2.4m expansion which has seen Gippsland Rotary Centenary House double in size has been officially opened today.

The expansion includes nine new units; new bathroom and laundry facilities; outdoor areas; and a meeting room that will be used to train staff from the Gippsland Cancer Care Centre (GCCC) and Latrobe Regional Hospital (LRH).

Federal Member for Gippsland Darren Chester and State Member for Morwell Russell Northe attended the proceedings.
