GOVERNMENTS MEETING THE CHALLENGE OF ICE HEAD ON

Federal Member for Gippsland Darren Chester says a new drug taskforce aimed at combating the scourge of ice will bring together all sections of the community to find practical solutions.

The Federal Government announced today it would establish a National Ice Taskforce, led by former Victoria Police Commissioner Ken Lay, to assist in creating a National Ice Action Strategy.

Mr Chester has met with local police and court officials, and also spoken in the Federal Parliament, about ice “spreading like a cancer” in some sections of the community and the need for extra prevention and awareness measures.

NBN COVERAGE TO BE INCREASED ACROSS GIPPSLAND

Thousands more households and businesses in Gippsland are closer to getting the National Broadband Network.

Federal Member for Gippsland Darren Chester said that work would start on the fixed-line NBN technology in Heyfield, parts of Morwell, Stratford, Maffra, Traralgon and Traralgon East, Wurruk and Sale within the next 18 months.

“This is a significant step forward in the NBN rollout and one that has been eagerly anticipated by people living in these towns,” Mr Chester said.

MAFFRA TRADERS UNITE TO GROW MAFFRA

Maffra traders have re-united five years after the cessation of the former Chamber of Commerce and will relaunch a tourism and business association.

The Nationals Member for Gippsland Darren Chester arranged a meeting of business and community representatives to initiate the reestablishment of a community development group to encourage more visitors to the town and help grow the local economy.

Mr Chester said he had been approached individually by several Maffra residents and business owners who could see the need to establish a Maffra tourism and business association.
