Federal Member for Gippsland Darren Chester has welcomed the announcement of $10 million for a much needed upgrade of Mallacoota-Genoa Road in the Budget.

Mr Chester has campaigned for funding to improve the main access road that links Mallacoota to the Princes Highway at Genoa.

“This is welcome news for Mallacoota, Genoa and surrounding communities as the road was not fit for purpose and endangering the lives of locals and visitors,” Mr Chester said.

“The funding commitment will improve safety and boost tourism in Mallacoota.

“The road had not received any major upgrades for more than 20 years and was severely compromised during last year’s summer bushfires. We were able to secure $2.7 million for much needed roadside safety works which are currently underway, but this additional funding will allow for major improvements.

“This funding will build a better, safer and more resilient transport link between the highway and the coast for the benefit of locals and visitors.

“Mallacoota was the community most adversely impacted by the summer bushfires and these road safety improvements will enhance the resilience of this key access route in emergency situations, as well as delivering economic benefits through the visitor economy.”

The upgrade will include shoulder sealing, sight line improvements, line marking and hazard removal in consultation with the priorities of local residents.

The project is expected to support 25 direct and indirect jobs during construction.

These works will provide a safer, more reliable road for all road users.
