The Sale RSL and Community Club will receive more than $15,000 in Federal Government funding to enhance its York Street clubrooms.
Federal Member for Gippsland Darren Chester today announced the club would use the money secured under the Veteran and Community Grants program to install automatic sliding doors and buy new furniture.
“This grant program is designed to help improve the quality of life for veterans and their families by funding projects that support the local veteran community,” Mr Chester said.
“Sale RSL and Community Club works tirelessly to improve the lives of veterans and their families and honour the service and sacrifice of all Australians who have served our nation.
“There’s no doubt that these simple additions to the rooms will have a big impact on the veterans’ enjoyment of their club.”
Club Vice President Marty Tanzer said the new sliding doors would be installed at the building’s rear entrance, adjacent to the carpark.
“We’ve got 765 members and 45 percent of them are aged 65 or over, which means a high proportion of our guests need aids to walk, such as walking frames,” Mr Tanzer said.
“The current doors need to be held open so these guests can get through. Automatic sliding doors will ensure entering and exiting our clubrooms is much easier and safer.
“We will also use the grant money to buy 10 light-weight tables and 50 lightweight chairs, so it’s easier and safer for our staff and members to move the furniture around.
“We are planning to hold more events in public places, such as barbeques in the park, to support our younger veterans. This new furniture will be useful as it can easily be put in the back of a ute or in a trailer.”
