Gippsland Cancer Care’s chemotherapy unit has doubled in size, following a $22 million expansion funded by the Federal Government.

Member for Gippsland Darren Chester officially opened the expansion this morning, which has increased capacity for renal dialysis and radiotherapy and provides more consulting rooms for oncologists. The chemotherapy unit has grown from 10 chairs to 22.

“It’s terrific to have state of the art facilities for our highly qualified health professionals to service the growing demand for cancer services in our region,” Mr Chester said.

“Tragically more than 1600 Gippslanders per year are diagnosed with some form of cancer and the capacity to receive treatment in our region will lead to better health outcomes.

“Reducing the amount of travel required for regional patients is one of the major benefits of the new facility and it will help to attract and retain staff in the Latrobe Valley.
