Woodside and District Football and Netball Club is among seven volunteer organisations in Yarram and the surrounding area to share more than $33,000 from the Federal Government.

Federal Member for Gippsland Darren Chester said the seven local groups were among 42 from Gippsland to receive a share of the $20 million available nationally under the Volunteer Grants program.

Mr Chester said the groups would each receive between $4000 and $5000 to support volunteers.

“A total of more than $145,000 has been allocated to community-run organisations in Gippsland,” Mr Chester said. “Of that money, more than $33,000 will be shared by groups from Yarram and the surrounding districts in South Gippsland.

“Woodside and District Football and Netball Club will receive almost $5000 to buy a new fridge, freezer and cooking facilities for the shared netball and tennis clubrooms.

“The club will also buy new outdoors bins with lids. The bins often blow over in the wind, and because they don’t have lids club volunteers spend a lot of time cleaning up and sorting the recyclables.

“Volunteers devote a lot of time raising money to buy much-needed equipment and undertake a variety of activities. Through the Volunteer Grants program, we can give them a helping hand and make their roles as volunteers easier and more enjoyable.

“The grant money can be used to buy equipment, such as computers, pay for training courses, undertake background checks, and reimburse volunteers for transport costs.

“Volunteers are the lifeblood of our community and by continuing to help each other and work together, we are building a stronger and safer Gippsland.”
