Federal Member for Gippsland Darren Chester is supporting a local campaign to address community safety in the Morwell Central Business District.

Two recent community forums have called for a more visible police presence and the installation of closed circuit television cameras (CCTV) in Morwell “hotspots” where crime was common.

Mr Chester said he supported calls for more CCTV cameras in the area and had already contacted the Minister for Justice seeking Federal Government support.

“The Federal Government has a Safer Communities Fund with funding to address crime and anti social behaviour through security initiatives such as CCTV and lighting,” Mr Chester said.

“I have made representations to Latrobe City Council making them aware of this fund and encouraging them to lodge an application when it opens later this year.

“I applaud the efforts of Morwell traders and residents to work together and come up with solutions to help move forward.

“The Morwell community has my support and I will work with all levels of government to try and secure funding for additional CCTV cameras.”
