The Australian Government is delivering safer roads in East Gippsland, with $573,000 to fix the intersection at Service and Francis Streets, Bairnsdale.

Minister for Infrastructure and Transport and Federal Member for Gippsland Darren Chester said the Australian Government was focused on ensuring road safety is a partnership between all levels of government and the community.
“We are partnering with East Gippsland Shire Council to deliver much needed local upgrades by fixing the dangerous intersection of Service Road and Francis Street,” Mr Chester said.
“This is just one example of the Australian Government’s commitment to improving roads across East Gippsland Shire with over $20.2 million being invested in the area between 2014 and 2019 under Roads to Recovery.”
East Gippsland Shire Deputy Mayor Colin Toohey said the Service Street upgrade was a crucial safety improvement for Bairnsdale motorists and pedestrians.
“This project will tackle a dangerous intersection with poor sight lines for drivers and heavy turning traffic, including large delivery trucks that frequently use the intersection,” Cr Toohey said.
“We welcome the Australian Government’s contribution of $573,000 to build a new roundabout and deliver associated footpath upgrades.
“Work on the project is underway and completion of the upgrade is due in late 2017.”
This is a $573,000 Roads to Recovery project, with additional contributions from East Gippsland Water of $43,000, and at least $127,000 from Council.
