Local MP Darren Chester found some familiar faces at the 50th anniversary commemoration of the Battles at Fire Support Bases Coral and Balmoral.

Representing Australians as the Minister for Veterans’ Affairs and Defence Personnel, Mr Chester caught up with Ian Place and Bob Lowick, from Churchill, at the 50th anniversary event.

The anniversary was marked by 1200 veterans attending services in Canberra at the  Royal Australian Artillery National Memorial and the Vietnam Forces National Memorial on Anzac Parade.

The event honoured soldiers who resisted attack at the Battles of Coral and Balmoral with an announcement, following His Excellency the Governor-General’s approval, to award the Unit Citation for Gallantry for these actions. The battles claimed 26 lives and 100 were wounded.
