A rest area for large vehicles at the Kalimna lookout on the way into Lakes Entrance has been upgraded as part of the $50 million roadworks package to improve safety along the Princes Highway east of Sale.

Federal Member for Gippsland Darren Chester announced $50 million for the Princes Highway when he was Minister for Infrastructure and Transport.  The works are being jointly funded by the Federal and State Governments.

Mr Chester said a series of community consultation sessions coordinated by VicRoads had identified pedestrian safety and a lack of overtaking opportunities as key concerns in Lakes Entrance and further east.

“The rest area at Lakes Entrance will encourage tourists who are towing a boat or caravan to take a break and enjoy the magnificent views over the entrance and the Gippsland Lakes,” Mr Chester said.

He said plans were also underway to upgrade the lookout and encourage more tourists into Lakes Entrance.

VicRoads will continue its works schedule in Lakes Entrance throughout this year, with plans for more safe crossing areas from carparks to the shopping strip; and a major overhaul of the Myer Street intersection.
