BOTH TRARALGON POST OFFICES TO STAY

May 28, 2009

Australia Post will begin renovations on the historic Franklin Street Post Office within the next couple of months after a successful community campaign to retain Traralgon’s postal services.

The Nationals Member for Gippsland Darren Chester has met several times with Australia Post management, who have confirmed that both the Franklin Street and Church Street sites will remain.

Mr Chester said works were currently being scheduled to upgrade the historic Franklin Street Post Office.

“This is a win for the Traralgon and district residents who made it clear that they preferred to do their postal business in Franklin Street,” Mr Chester said.

The announcement follows a community rally during the Gippsland by-election in June and a postcard campaign led by Mr Chester, along with a petition which received more than 3000 signatures.

“I take this opportunity to thank all of the residents who took the time to sign the petition, attend the rally or write to me personally.

“I met with Australia Post management several times after the by-election and provided them with a full briefing on the range of issues which residents had presented to me.

“I particularly wish to thank Australia Post staff members for their cooperation and willingness to provide the service which the Traralgon community has requested.”
