Federal Member for Gippsland Darren Chester has paid tribute to the management and staff at Morwell Bowling Club for the ‘extraordinary recovery’ efforts after a fire devastated the complex one year ago.
Mr Chester toured the facility with manager Teena Johnson (pictured) and received an update on the reconstruction plans.
“It’s been an extraordinary recovery from the entire team at Morwell Bowling Club to get the club functioning after the accidental fire destroyed large sections of the facility in August last year,” Mr Chester said.
“As we approach the one-year anniversary of the fire, it’s amazing to look back and see everything the club’s board, staff and volunteer members have achieved.
“There’s a fully-functioning bistro operating under a temporary dome, the main fire-damaged building has been demolished and reconstruction could start as early as next month, and the smoke-damaged function room is on track to re-open in December.”
Gippsland firm Farnham Developments has been working with local sub-contractors to deliver the function room as soon as possible before starting the major job, which could take up to 15-18 months.
“Well done to everyone involved in bringing this important hub of the community back to life as quickly as humanly possible after such a devastating fire,” Mr Chester said.
