The Federal Budget will boost the Gippsland economy with thousands of Gippsland wage earners set to receive more than $1000 each when they fill out their tax return this year.

Local MP Darren Chester said the Federal Budget was focused on putting more money back into the pockets of Gippslanders to help with the cost of living and to create more local jobs.

Under the government’s plan, low and middle income earners will receive up to $1080 each which means a two income family can receive up to $2160 through the new targeted tax offset.

“The Federal Budget is good for Gippsland and good for Australia,”Mr Chester said.

“We have been able to put more money back into the pockets of Gippslanders through the tax offset and an Energy Assistance Payment, while still delivering record funding for infrastructure, health, education and aged care services.

“There are a lot of families struggling with the drought and high cost of living. The government should only take as much money in taxes as it needs to fund essential services and the public infrastructure we all want.

“As much as possible, we need to reward Gippslanders for working hard and let them decide where they spend their money in the local community.

Mr Chester said the budget included funding for dozens of small and large projects across Gippsland and an opportunity to build a better and safer road network.

“There is $300 million new funding for the Princes Highway in Victoria, on top of the $132 million already allocated to finish the duplication between Traralgon and Sale,” Mr Chester said.

“All local councils will receive increased funding for local roads with a focus on road safety, productivity and boosting the visitor economy.

“Gippsland small business owners will also benefit from the budget with an extension of the instant asset write off, on top of lower tax rates which have already been delivered.

“I’m focused on putting locals first and delivering for Gippsland, and this budget will help to boost our region.”
