Access to Bullock Island in Lakes Entrance is set to be improved after local residents expressed concern about the deteriorating condition of the road leading to the popular destination. Local Members of Parliament Darren Chester and Tim Bull visited the island this morning with East Gippsland Shire Council Chief Executive Officer Gary Gaffney.

Mr Chester said there was strong community interest in improving road access for locals and visitors to the region.

Bullock Island falls within the responsibility of the State Government Department of Environment, Land, Water and Planning.

Mr Chester said he had been advised that the gravel road on Bullock Island would be graded as soon as possible.

“Bullock Island provides an ideal location to enjoy the iconic Gippsland Lakes,” Mr Chester said.

“It is popular for families fishing and dolphin spotting.

“It is important locals and visitors to the region continue to be able to use Bullock Island to its potential and I will work with my State Parliamentary colleague Tim Bull and other levels of government to see Bullock Island thoughtfully developed to accommodate a range of uses.”

Member for Gippsland East, Tim Bull, said he hoped the road upgrade would be the first of several projects to enhance the island, adding he was also looking forward to the retail fresh fish shop returning to its original site at the Fisherman’s Cooperative in the near future.

“It’s a great place that’s becoming more popular and it’s pleasing this badly needed road work will be done pre-Christmas.”
