Federal Member for Gippsland Darren Chester has slammed the ‘bureaucratic madness’ of an Albanese Government program that is set to rob local netballers of a much-needed $20,000 grant.
Mr Chester said a local assessment panel had recommended the Heyfield Football Netball Club receive the money to build shelters alongside the netball court to protect players and supporters from inclement weather.
“It’s a good project, and the club has also committed its own money to improve conditions for netballers and their supporters,” Mr Chester explained.
“Under the Stronger Communities Program, there is an eligibility criteria that covers ‘provision of women’s facilities at sporting grounds/buildings’.
“The local panel recommended this project for funding, but we’ve received a message from the Albanese Government that the project is ineligible because ‘the undercover netball shelter would not be considered as women’s facilities’.
“This is bureaucratic madness, and I’ve made an urgent appeal to the Minister for Sport, Annika Wells, to overturn this stupid ruling.”
In his letter, Mr Chester has pointed out that the club has limited opportunities to raise money and was looking to grow women’s sport.
“The club has also argued in its submission that the absence of suitable shelters is a barrier to participation in a predominantly female sport,” Mr Chester wrote.
“Winter conditions in Heyfield can be quite hostile, and players waiting for their game, or supporters who may also be caring for the babies and young children of players, need a covered area.
“The club has fundraised to add to the proposed SCP contribution, and it would be bizarre for the government to refuse to fund a project that actively encourages support and participation in women’s sport.
“This little country club has very few alternative avenues to secure funding and is aiming to increase participation of women and girls in sport, particularly through netball, and to improve access and equity for these valued community and club members.
“Surely it makes sense for SCP to help the Heyfield committee provide an inclusive, safe and respectful environment that matches facilities provided to those playing football?”
