A pilot program run by Monash University is helping student teachers gain an understanding of professional life in a regional setting, according to Federal Member for Gippsland Darren Chester.

During a visit to Cann River P12 College Mr Chester met Monash University Peninsula student-teacher Jordan Findlay who lives in Narre Warren on Melbourne’s outskirts and has just finished a three-week placement at the school.

Mr Chester said the placement was the perfect opportunity for students like Jordan to experience life in a small regional community.

“It’s not until you have lived and worked in a small community like Cann River that you can appreciate the opportunities,” Mr Chester said.

“Jordan enjoyed her time at Cann River which is a credit to all the staff and students at the school who have made a concerted effort to make her feel welcome.”

Mr Chester said placing students in small communities as part of their studies could help increase the number of university graduates who move to regional areas to work.

“To continue to provide quality essential services like education and health in our communities we need to be able to attract and retain the next generation of professionals,” Mr Chester said.

“I have no doubt that one of the best ways to do this is to provide meaningful training opportunities for students during their studies which display the benefits of working in a regional community.”

Mr Chester also spoke to Cann River students about the importance of striving to achieve their full potential.

Mr Chester speaks regularly at Gippsland schools around Parliamentary sittings and any school wishing to request a visit should contact his office on 5144 6744.
