CARERS WEEK 2009

October 21, 2009

The Nationals Member for Gippsland has welcomed the recognition of the role carers play in the Gippsland community through Carers Week and encouraged people across the region to show their appreciation and support.

Mr Chester said carers play a vital role in ensuring quality of life for individuals in their care and their valuable contribution to the local community is too often underestimated.

“The role of a carer is extremely tough and it takes a person with special qualities to be able to consistently care for a family member or friend 24 hours a day, seven days a week,” Mr Chester said.

“There is no doubt that many residents with high needs as a result of disability or illness across Gippsland would not be able to continue to live at home without the assistance that their carers provide.

“Importantly carers aren’t confined to a specific group. They come from all walks of life and of many different ages, but they all make personal sacrifices to care for a family member or friend.”

Carers Week will conclude on Saturday, October 24 and Mr Chester encouraged the local community to recognise carers and acknowledge the time and support they give to others during the week and into the future.

“It’s important that we recognise the often underestimated role carers play in our local communities,” Mr Chester said.

“I encourage everyone who knows a carer to make an effort over the week and into the future to spend some time to show their appreciation and support for the vital contribution carers make to our community.

“Often simple acts of kindness can go a long way to showing your appreciation for the extraordinary efforts of others.”
