CHESTER BACKS NATIONAL STRONGER REGIONS FUND

August 29, 2013

Federal Member for Gippsland Darren Chester has welcomed today’s announcement by Leader of The Nationals Warren Truss that a future Coalition Government will deliver a $1 billion ‘National Stronger Regions Fund’ over five years.

Mr Chester said he had strongly advocated for a fund to drive regional growth and congratulated Mr Truss on his capacity to deliver on behalf of all regional communities.

“As Leader of The Nationals, Warren has campaigned strongly within the Coalition to secure this fund and it’s a great win for regional Australia,” Mr Chester said.

“If the Coalition is elected into government, I look forward to working closely with Warren to gain maximum value for all regional communities under this program.

“As the Member for Gippsland, I will be aiming to make sure that my community receives a fair share from the new fund.”

In addition to the National Stronger Regions Fund, the Coalition has also committed:

* $300 million for a Bridges Renewal Program, equalling $600 million worth of investment;

* $147 million investment in agriculture, including in R&D, export measures, biosecurity, access to new technologies and chemicals and increased funding to support agricultural education;

* $106 million for rural and regional health initiatives covering training, hospitals, allied health workers, cheaper medicines and bowel cancer screening; and

* $100 million for mobile phone black spots.
