Federal Member for Gippsland Darren Chester has launched “Putting Locals First Month”, a July social media campaign celebrating the small and family-owned businesses that are the backbone of the regional economy.
Mr Chester said the month-long campaign would highlight local businesses across Gippsland and encourage residents to support the people who invest in the region every day.
“Small and family-owned businesses are the engine room of the Gippsland economy,” Mr Chester said.
“They create local jobs, support local families, sponsor sporting clubs and community groups, and help make our towns stronger.
“But many local businesses are doing it tough right now, and it has never been more important to back the people who back our communities.”
Throughout July, Mr Chester will feature a range of local businesses across Gippsland as part of the campaign, showcasing their contribution to the region’s economy and community life.
“Putting Locals First Month is about recognising the enormous contribution small businesses make to our region and encouraging Gippslanders to support local operators whenever they can,” Mr Chester said.
“When we put locals first, we help make Gippsland an even better place to live, work, visit and raise a family.
“Our local businesses are more than shopfronts and workplaces; they are part of the fabric of our communities.
“They employ local people, support local causes and contribute to the identity, resilience and strength of towns right across Gippsland.”
Mr Chester said the campaign would also shine a light on the hard work, innovation and community spirit of business owners and their staff.
“Behind every small business is someone taking a risk, working hard, employing locals and having a go,” Mr Chester said.
“I want to use this month to celebrate the wonderful businesses that do so much for Gippsland and remind people that every dollar spent locally helps support local jobs, local families and local communities.
“Whether it’s buying a coffee, booking a local tradie, shopping in town or choosing a Gippsland producer, every small decision makes a difference.”
