Federal Member for Gippsland Darren Chester met with Wellington Shire Council representatives in Federal Parliament during the 2026 National General Assembly of Local Government.
Wellington Shire Council CEO David Morcom, Deputy Mayor Liz Foat and Councillors Geoff Wells and John Tatterson were in Canberra for the 32nd National General Assembly, convened by the Australian Local Government Association.
Mr Chester said it was a valuable opportunity to discuss the priorities, projects and challenges facing communities across Wellington Shire.
“We discussed upcoming works, local events and some of the ongoing challenges facing local government, particularly when it comes to funding the infrastructure and services our communities rely on,” Mr Chester said.
The Wellington Shire representatives joined more than 1,100 local government leaders from across Australia attending the Assembly.
Mr Chester said the long-term financial sustainability of local government remained one of the biggest challenges facing councils, particularly in regional areas.
“The biggest issue councils continue to face is the long-term financial sustainability of local government and the need to secure funding for critical infrastructure such as roads, community facilities and public spaces.
“I will continue to support efforts to deliver a fairer share of funding for local projects and give our communities the chance to set their own priorities, rather than being dictated to by Canberra-based ministers and bureaucrats.
“Funding for regional development has been decimated by the Albanese Government, and the pipeline of local projects is drying up.
“We need a reliable source of funding to keep delivering the sporting centres, walking trails, childcare facilities and other community infrastructure our region needs.”
