Federal Member for Gippsland Darren Chester has expressed his sympathy for the many locals who have experienced significant property and asset losses due to floods across Gippsland, particularly in Latrobe Valley.

“It will be a significant clean-up effort to restore homes, fences and other property losses over the coming weeks and months,” Mr Chester said.

“A huge thank you to everyone who has helped in any way this week, whether it’s our emergency service workers, council staff, contractors or volunteers everyone has put in a remarkable effort over the last few days.

“When things get tough in Gippsland we have shown time and again how we rally together. It’s our great community spirit that sees us through.

“From the initial response to the storms and flooding across the region, through to the clean-up and recovery efforts, I want to thank everyone who contributes to our community in difficult times.

“Tragically, there has been one life lost in the floods, and I offer my deepest condolences to his family and friends.

“We know the clean-up can also be dangerous with unstable trees and debris and I urge everyone to monitor emergency advice and be careful.

“Again thank you to everyone who has helped already and thank you to everyone who will be involved in the clean-up efforts as the flood waters subside.

“Stay safe everyone and please keep monitoring conditions in your area and make good decisions for the safety of yourself and everyone you love.”
