CHESTER URGES RESIDENTS TO PREPARE FOR SUMMER

October 15, 2013

Gippsland and Latrobe Valley residents are being encouraged to begin preparations for the bushfire season by Federal Member for Gippsland Darren Chester.

Mr Chester said summer was only seven weeks away and early preparation was a key in protecting homes.

He said residents should begin implementing or reviewing their bushfire plans and cleaning up fuel loads around homes.

“Now is the perfect time to begin implementing a bushfire plan or reviewing one you already have in place,” Mr Chester said.

“Bushfire plans cannot be underestimated. They are an essential way of planning for the protection of your family, your home, as well as pets and other livestock.

“The whole family should have input and be aware of the plan to make sure that everyone is prepared.”

Mr Chester said that local councils would assist residents to prepare for summer by offering free green waste disposal at transfer stations on selected days in coming weeks.

There will be no charge for green waste disposal for residents located within Wellington Shire Council on Saturday, November 2; Sunday, November 3; and Monday, November 4.

Latrobe City Council residents will be able to dispose of their green waste for free on Saturday November 30; Sunday, December 1.

Residents in East Gippsland can dispose of green waste under 0.3 metre in diameter for free at any East Gippsland Shire Council facility at any time.
