Federal Member for Gippsland Darren Chester got a close up look at an energy from waste facility under construction near Perth recently.
Mr Chester said the facility was a good example of the technology which is well developed around the world and here in Australia.
“The proposed energy from waste project in Maryvale involving Opal Australia, Veolia and Masdar Tribe Australia, will be a first for Victoria but the technology has been implemented for decades in Europe,” Mr Chester said.
“The Maryvale project will divert 325,000 tonnes of waste each year from landfill and create an estimated 500 jobs during construction plus 455 ongoing roles.
“While construction on the project in Perth is well advanced there are still a few hurdles that the Maryvale project needs to overcome.
“I helped secured a $48.2 million Federal Government grant to support the project and help Maryvale modernise operations.
“This is a world-class and environmentally sustainable project that will support the economic recovery of our region after several setbacks in recent years.
“I am optimistic all levels of government in Gippsland will work together with the proponents to deliver this exciting project.”
