Federal Member for Gippsland Darren Chester has joined Wellington Shire Council representatives in welcoming 57 new Australian citizens at a citizenship ceremony held at The Wedge.
Mr Chester attended the ceremony alongside Wellington Shire Council Mayor Cindy Madeley, Deputy Mayor Liz Foat, Councillor Wells, Councillor Lowe and CEO David Morcom.
Mr Chester said it was a privilege to celebrate the newest Australians as they officially became citizens.
“Citizenship ceremonies are always special occasions, and it was wonderful to join family, friends and community members at The Wedge to welcome 57 new Australians,” Mr Chester said.
“Each new citizen has taken an important step in their life and has become part of our shared national story.
“Becoming an Australian citizen is a proud milestone and one that brings with it both rights and responsibilities.”
Mr Chester said citizenship ceremonies provide an opportunity to reflect on the values, freedoms and opportunities shared by Australians.
“These ceremonies remind us of the freedoms and opportunities we enjoy as Australians, and the responsibility we all have to contribute to our communities and our nation,” Mr Chester said.
“They also highlight the important contribution people from different backgrounds make to the strength, character and success of local communities like Wellington Shire.”
Mr Chester said Gippsland had always been strengthened by people who come to the region to work, raise families, volunteer, start businesses and contribute to community life.
“We are fortunate that these 57 new Australians have chosen to build their lives and futures here in Gippsland,” Mr Chester said.
“Our communities are made stronger by people who bring new experiences, traditions and perspectives, while sharing in the values that unite us as Australians.
“Congratulations to every new citizen and their families on this proud milestone.”
