Roadworks to improve safety along Church Street, Lakes Entrance are now complete following a $330,000 upgrade funded under the Australian Government’s Roads to Recovery Program.

Assistant Minister to the Deputy Prime Minister Keith Pitt said the works were a great example of how Roads to Recovery was supporting routine maintenance and safety enhancements to local road networks, benefitting communities.

“Through Roads to Recovery, the Coalition Government is investing $4.8 billion through to 2022 to deliver better and safer roads for local communities such as Lakes Entrance, and help local councils maintain their road infrastructure,” Mr Pitt said.

Federal Member for Gippsland Darren Chester said the works were identified after a road safety audit of the section between Mechanics and Carpenter streets – one of the busiest roads in the shire.

“Two raised road pavement areas have been constructed at the Mechanics Street and Carpenter Street intersections to slow traffic at these key locations,” Mr Chester said.

“This is one of a number of federally-funded road projects underway across the region. Among them, the $5 million safety upgrade of The Esplanade at Lakes Entrance.”

East Gippsland Shire Mayor Joe Rettino said pedestrian crossing points had also been constructed to help formalise the flow of foot traffic and make it easier for people to cross Church Street.

“The project also included new sections of kerb and channel and associated drainage at the Bulmer Street intersection to narrow the road,” Cr Rettino said.

The Australian Government fully funded the $330,000 project under the Roads to Recovery Program.
