A $1.78 million project to upgrade a busy residential street in Traralgon is almost finished.

Latrobe City Council has been undertaking the road improvements in Garibaldi Street over three stages with Federal Government funding.

The Nationals Member for Gippsland Darren Chester said the project involved rebuilding the pavement and kerbing.

“The third stage of this project is now underway along a 240 metre stretch of Garibaldi Street at its western end and should be completed in the coming weeks,” Mr Chester said.

“Latrobe City Council has been allocated $2.75 million from the Federal Government this year under the Roads to Recovery program, and an additional $11.3 million Financial Assistance Grants that can be spent on local roads and other priorities,” Mr Chester said.

“These programs provide funding directly to local government so that councillors can make sure the priority projects from each community are the ones that get funded.”

Work on the project began in 2015 and has included replacing the pavement and kerbing along a 280 metre section of Sanders Crescent and in Griffiths Court.

Latrobe City Mayor Councillor Kellie O’Callaghan thanked Mr Chester for the continued support of Council’s road renewal program through Roads to Recovery.

“The funding allocated to this project over the past two years has enabled Council to deliver a quality project to the residents of Garibaldi Street and surrounds, as well as drivers who use this area of Traralgon,” Cr O’Callaghan said.

“There is a reasonably high flow of traffic in this part of town as the Traralgon Sports Stadium is located nearby. Receiving the funding of $1.78 million meant being able to reconstruct the road surface and that means a smoother, safer drive.

“Without the Roads to Recovery grant, Council would be faced with a significant funding challenge that would ultimately prevent us from delivering projects such as this one in Garibaldi Street.”
