The Nationals Member for Gippsland Darren Chester says he is looking forward to working with newly elected State Member for Gippsland South Danny O’Brien on a wide range of important issues.

Mr Chester said he had known his new state colleague for more than 20 years and Mr O’Brien would bring a huge wealth of knowledge from his background in trade, agriculture, small business and politics.

“Many projects, such as major road safety upgrades, require a partnership of state and federal government funding and I trust Danny to work hard for his region,” Mr Chester said.

“I believe he will do an outstanding job in State Parliament to secure more jobs for Gippslanders in both our traditional industries and new, emerging opportunities.

“As a young family man, he understands the types of challenges that every day hard working Gippslanders face. I’m confident Danny has the passion and experience to secure more road funding; better schools and hospitals; support for families; and promoting jobs growth in our region.”

Mr Chester said the by-election result was also a resounding endorsement for The Nationals.

“The Nationals are the only party solely dedicated to improving the lives of people who live in regional areas and Saturday’s result showed the people of Gippsland South want the Nationals to be their voice in parliament,” Mr Chester said.

“I would like to commend all candidates for putting their names forward – there was a good mix of high quality candidates and it contributed to a spirited election contest. It was a great example of our democracy in action and a credit to all the candidates and their supporters.”
