Federal Member for Gippsland Darren Chester met with the management team at Fenning Timbers in Bairnsdale to discuss key issues of concern affecting the local business and the timber industry more broadly.

Mr Chester said Fenning Timbers was a key employer for the region, directly employing more than 30 and supporting local contractors.

“The company is investing millions into new technologies to maintain its position as one of the most successful and modern hardwood plants in Australia,” Mr Chester said

Mr Chester said he would continue to work with his Parliamentary colleagues on supply issues to keep the industry viable and support those jobs which it provides.

“The vast majority of Victoria’s forest is protected and only a small percentage is available for harvesting on a rotational basis,” Mr Chester said.

“We have a world class and sustainable timber industry which is a much better alternative than importing products from countries with lower environmental standards.”

“The industry is currently dealing with some unfair perceptions and misinformation which is affecting its ability to secure some long-term availability of timber.

“Supply issues not only affects local timber jobs but also downstream users, including furniture making, cabinetry and the building industry.”
