Low-level flooding of community infrastructure at Nowa Nowa is making recovery from the bushfires and coronavirus pandemic more difficult for local business owners, according to Federal Member for Gippsland Darren Chester.
Mr Chester met with business and community leaders to discuss plans to upgrade the Princes Highway and local facilities to improve liveability and boost the visitor economy.
“Unfortunately, some infrastructure is inundated at the moment with the entrance closed at Lake Tyers,” Mr Chester said.
“I’ve asked East Gippsland Catchment Management Authority to look at options to reduce the impact by forcing the entrance open when conditions are right.
“I’m also working with the community to put forward plans for further town upgrades using money that has been allocated to our region for bushfire recovery.
“Nowa Nowa is well placed on the Lake Tyers estuary and alongside the East Gippsland Rail Trail to attract more visitors and develop as an outdoor activity-based destination.”
