Princes Highway upgrades at Fulham are progressing well, with the new section of dual lane highway expected to open to traffic by the end of this year.

Federal Member for Gippsland Darren Chester said motorists had shown great patience but would be relieved to hear works on this section were almost completed.

The Fulham 2 section includes two lanes of traffic in both directions and an upgrade to the intersection at Sale-Cowwarr Road and Hopkins-Williams Road.

Mr Chester said Fulham 2 works were one of three additional sections of duplication following a further commitment of $85 million to improve journey reliability, traffic flow and road safety. This was in addition to the $175 million already invested in the project.

“Work to duplicate the Princes Highway between Traralgon and Sale began in 2010. It’s been a huge project, but it will deliver road safety and transport benefits for years to come.

“I thank motorists for their patience while construction has been underway.

“The highway upgrades will save lives; support local industries by helping them to get their products to market quickly and reliably; and will help grow the tourism industry by making the journey to Gippsland faster and safer.”

Two further sections of the highway are still underway.

Traralgon East 3 is on track for completion in 2019.

Nambrok 3 is scheduled to open a new west bound carriageway for traffic early next year, with the full stage due for completion late in 2018.

The Federal Government is contributing $210 million to the Princes Highway duplication project. The Victorian Government is funding the remaining $50 million.

The $260 million project will duplicate 30.9 kilometres of the 47.3 kilometres of highway from Traralgon to Sale.
