Funding for Community Groups

August 1, 2018

New funding is available for community groups to purchase equipment and build small infrastructure projects in Gippsland.

Federal Member for Gippsland Darren Chester encouraged local groups to lodge an Expression of Interest (EoI) for round four of the #lovegippsland Stronger Communities Program. Applications open next week (August 6) and must be received in Mr Chester’s office by August 31.

Mr Chester said the program provided a funding stream for hall upgrades, kitchen equipment, changeroom facilities and other smaller infrastructure projects that community groups often found hard to fund.

“Gippsland has been very successful under previous rounds of the #lovegippsland Stronger Communities Program, with $450,000 shared across local community groups.

“We’ve seen local halls refurbished, club canteens upgraded, tennis and netball courts resurfaced, electronic scoreboards erected at recreation reserves and seating, staging and sound systems purchased to assist volunteer and community groups,” Mr Chester said.

“Grants are available between $2,500 and $20,000 for community and sporting clubs to upgrade their facilities and create better opportunities for our region. Applicants must match the funding for the project, cash or in-kind, and works should be able to completed by June 30, 2019.

“I encourage local groups to visit my website and complete an Expression of Interest form and lodge an application.”

Minister for Regional Development, Territories and Local Government John McVeigh said the program is aimed at funding projects that deliver social benefits and form part of the Coalition Government’s continuing commitment to strengthen communities across Australia.

“Our local communities are the heart of this great country and the investment in local projects under the Stronger Communities Program is about invigorating these communities and ensuring their continued success,” Dr McVeigh said.

“The program will fund small capital projects, which can range from upgrading the local community hall or sporting facility, building new bike paths, or providing essential equipment for the local SES. These are the sorts of vital projects that bring our communities together, strengthen our social connections, build community participation and create vibrant and viable communities into the future.”

Each electorate will receive $150,000 to allocate towards successful projects, with a maximum of 20 projects to be funded per electorate.

Applications open on Monday August 6, 2018, and close on Thursday October 11, 2018. Groups must first lodge an Expression of Interest form and successful applicants will be invited to complete a full submission. Expression of Interest Form are available from www.darrenchester.com.au. Grant guidelines and further details can also be found at www.business.gov.au/scp
