Gippsland students Rebecca Dunsmuir and Elizabeth Crerar are making the most of the Investing in Youth Studentship Program.
This week they caught up with local Federal MP Darren Chester in Canberra to discuss agricultural issues and opportunities for the future in the primary industries sector.
Rebecca from East Gippsland and Elizabeth from West Gippsland are both participating in the program which offers undergraduate students financial support; a mentor to provide valuable career advice; and the opportunity to undertake relevant industry placements.
Applicants are selected on the basis of their commitment to a career in primary industries and can receive support for up to four years.
Rebecca from Munro, is currently undertaking a double degree in Agricultural Science and Business at La Trobe University. She has already worked in several roles in the industry during her studies and hopes to assist farmers to improve their production and profitability after completing her studies.
Elizabeth from Pearcedale, moved interstate and is now studying a Bachelor of Livestock Science at the University of New England. She has been focusing on nutrition, breeding, genetics and diseases.
Mr Chester said the program was a great opportunity for students who are passionate about the future of agriculture.
“We need more talented young people like Rebecca and Elizabeth to choose a career in agriculture,” he said.
“Providing networks for future agriculture and agribusiness professionals to share and build on their knowledge will eventually lead to better achievements and more efficient businesses in the future.
“The Investing in Youth Studentship program is one example of how the government and businesses can support and provide greater opportunities for young people making the transition from university to the workplace.”
