GRANTS FOR PROJECTS TO HONOUR GIPPSLAND’S VETERANS

December 14, 2010

Two projects in Gippsland to honour Australia’s servicemen and women will share in $6500 in Federal Government Saluting Their Service grants.

Federal Member for Gippsland Darren Chester has welcomed the funding for the projects organised by the Briagolong Primary School and Yinnar & District Community Association.

$3000 will help Briagolong Primary School grade 6 students to produce a book about the war service of local veterans based on a 1920 handwritten document donated to the school listing the names of former staff and students from the school who served during the First World War.

And the Yinnar & District Community Association will receive $3605 to restore the Yinnar & District War Memorial.

Mr Chester said Saluting Their Service grants help local communities to undertake projects that commemorate veterans from the area who served in wars and conflicts.

“It’s important we remember those who participated in national service throughout our history, particularly those from our local communities,” Mr Chester said.

“Our servicemen and women helped shape our great nation and by undertaking projects to commemorate their service we can ensure that their efforts are on display for future generations.”

Mr Chester encouraged local community and ex-service organisations interested in applying for funding to visit www.dva.gov.au/grants or to contact their nearest DVA office on 1800 555 254.
