A Green Army revegetation project along the Gippsland Plains Rail Trail between Traralgon and Heyfield has just been completed.

Federal Member for Gippsland Darren Chester said the Green Army program provided young people with work experience and training on environmental projects.

During the past six months, participants have assisted with researching and developing content for interpretative signage and distance markers along the Gippsland Plains Rail Trail.

“These participants have not only generated real environmental benefits for our community, they have also been able to gain valuable practical skills and experience to help them prepare for the workforce and improve their career prospects,” Mr Chester said.

Works have been overseen by the Gippsland Plains Rail Trail Committee of Management with advice from key partners such as Department of Environment and Primary Industries, Landcare, Latrobe City Council and local historical societies.

Right across Australia, the Green Army program is helping improve local communities through projects such as restoring and protecting habitat, weeding, planting, cleaning up creeks and rivers and restoring cultural heritage places.

The Green Army is Australia’s largest-ever voluntary team supporting environmental action across the country.
