Federal Gippsland MP Darren Chester has welcomed a decision that will give firearm users a seat at the table in a review of the National Firearms Agreement (NFA).

The Coalition Government has announced that a new Industry Reference Group will provide advice on behalf of licensed firearm users to the Firearms and Weapons Policy Working Group.

Minister for Justice Michael Keenan said consultation with industry and licensed shooters would be vital to produce sensible reforms as the Government reviews the technical elements of the agreement.

“I welcome the announcement, as I had written to the Prime Minister on behalf of local firearm owners and local retailers on this issue,” Mr Chester said.

“I believe law-abiding gun owners should be able to have a say in the NFA review and play a role in the decision making process, through the new Industry Reference Group.

“In particular I congratulate Nationals Senator Bridget McKenzie, who played an important role in achieving this outcome, working together with the Minister for Justice.”

In January, the Martin Place Siege Review recommended that the Commonwealth, States and Territories simplify the regulation of the legal firearms market through an update of the technical elements of the NFA.
