Federal Member for Gippsland Darren Chester has welcomed the formation of a Gippsland Lakes Ministerial Advisory Committee and congratulated State Member for Gippsland East Tim Bull for securing the $10 million in funding.

“The health of the Gippsland Lakes and catchment has been a passion of mine for many years and this funding is a breakthrough for our region,” Mr Chester said.

“This was a pivotal issue in the State campaign last year and all credit should go to Tim Bull for keeping it on the new government’s agenda.

“At a time of strict budgetary constraints it’s pleasing that this program for practical environmental works will be developed in the interests of a healthier lakes system.

“It would be great to see the Federal Government finally come on board for some ongoing funding for the Gippsland Lakes.”

State Minister for Environment and Climate Change Ryan Smith said the committee would help ensure the environmental significance of the lakes was maintained into the future.

“The Ministerial Advisory Committee will play a vital role in protecting the environmental welfare of the lakes and guide decision-making on development within the lakes region,” Mr Smith said.

“This announcement marks a new era towards protecting the lakes and the surrounding catchment which will in turn increase the capacity of tourism, recreation and business opportunities.”

Mr Ryan said the government was seeking nominations from people with experience in the field of environmental science, tourism and recreation, business and management, strategy and planning; and environment and conservation.

“The Ministerial Advisory Committee will develop an environmental strategy for the Gippsland Lakes to enhance opportunities for the State’s recreational fishers and tourism related business in the area,” Mr Ryan said.

“The government is investing $10 million over four years for practical environmental projects to protect the lakes, which is one of Australia’s most significant natural landmarks.”
