Federal Member for Gippsland Darren Chester is encouraging young aspiring sportspeople to apply for the third round of the Local Sporting Champions Program.

The Local Sporting Champions program provides financial assistance to aspiring young athletes, coaches and officials between the ages of 12-18 attending eligible state, national or international sporting championships.

Mr Chester said the Local Sporting Champions program is an important initiative for talented young sportspeople and their families with grants of up to $750 available.

“The grants are a small contribution to help families with the cost of elite competition,” Mr Chester said.

“Competing at state, national and international level requires enormous dedication by young athletes and support from their families,” Mr Chester said.

“The Local Sporting Champions program is designed to support young athletes to reach their potential by easing the financial pressure of taking part in high-level competition,” he said.

“The program encourages more young people to get more active more often while removing some of the barriers for children chasing their sporting dreams.”

Applications for the third and final round close on 31 December 2019.
