Federal Member for Gippsland Darren Chester has praised Longford Primary School students for their impressive understanding of Australian democracy, government and community leadership following a visit to the school.
Mr Chester spent time with both the Grade 1 and 2 class and the Grade 3 and 4 class, answering questions, discussing his role as the Federal Member for Gippsland and explaining how the Australian Parliament works.
“I was very impressed by the students’ understanding of Australian government and the role it plays in our community,” Mr Chester said.
“I have to say I was particularly impressed by the Grade 1 and 2 students.
“Their civics and citizenship knowledge was outstanding, although it is probably fair to say they were a little less accurate when it came to guessing my age, with 75 years old the opening guess from the class.”
During the visit, Mr Chester spoke about his role as a local Member of Parliament and shared some of the achievements he is most proud of during his time in public office.
“I enjoyed the opportunity to explain more about my role as the Federal Member for Gippsland and discuss some of the projects and initiatives I have been involved with over the years,” he said.
“That included the duplication of the Princes Highway between Sale and Traralgon and the introduction of assistance dogs during my time as Minister for Veterans’ Affairs.”
Mr Chester said students from both classes asked thoughtful and engaging questions, demonstrating a strong interest in how government operates.
“One of the standout questions came from young Benji Krusic in the Grade 1 and 2 class, who asked how integrity is maintained in government,” he said.
“That is an important question and one that showed real curiosity and maturity.”
Mr Chester said school visits are among the most rewarding parts of his role as the Member for Gippsland.
“Spending time with local students, the next generation of Gippslanders, is always one of the most rewarding parts of being out in the electorate,” he said.
“Their enthusiasm, curiosity and willingness to ask big questions gives me great confidence in the future of our region.”
