Local MP Darren Chester is encouraging Men’s Sheds throughout Gippsland to apply for funding under the latest round of the National Men’s Shed Development Programme (NDSP).

Mr Chester said the round would focus on projects with a strong health, wellbeing or safety focus.

“The coronavirus pandemic and restrictions have meant Men’s Sheds have not been able to operate as they normally would,” Mr Chester said.

“As we re-open as a region Men’s Sheds will provide much needed social support and engagement for the members.

“Men’s Sheds make a valuable contribution to the community and there’s a strong sense of camaraderie and mateship among the blokes who give their time to do something for others.”

Mr Chester said keeping active was important for a healthy lifestyle.

“These sheds keep people physically active but also engaged with others within the community through membership but also community outreach,” Mr Chester said.

“Throughout Gippsland many have felt quite isolated and ensuring these sheds can continue to run and support its members is essential for general health and wellbeing of our older population.”

Men’s Sheds can apply for financial support across the following funding categories:

  • Health, wellbeing and events – $8,000 maximum
  • Shed improvements – $8,000 maximum
  • Equipment – $5,000 maximum

Minister for Regional Health, Regional Communications and Local Government, Mark Coulton said Sheds play a vital role in regional Australia.

“In many parts of regional Australia, local Men’s Sheds are fast becoming one of the most important regional organisations, one where members make connections and serve their community,” Minister Coulton said.

“This new grant round means more funding for Sheds and local communities.”

Applications for the current round of funding closes Friday November 27, 2020.
