New flags will fly from the flagpoles at Mallacoota P-12 College this week after Federal Member for Gippsland Darren Chester presented students with new Australian and Indigenous flags.
“The community of Mallacoota has faced an extremely challenging summer with the fires and there is a long road ahead as we rebuild and recover,” Mr Chester said.
“Providing the school with new flags is a small way to offer support and boost the spirits of students, parents and teachers.”
Mr Chester said the school community had shown inspiring strength and resilience in the face of very difficult circumstances.
“It has been a challenging time for students and teachers with some losing their homes, but they have not given up hope or their desire to get stuck into the school year,” Mr Chester said.
“While the main school buildings were not directly impacted by the fires, the school did lose the chook house, part of the hothouse roof, fencing and gardening equipment.
“Helping rebuild these small but important parts of the school has been a priority and we must continue to support students and their families as they settle into the new school year.”
