The $6.2 million redevelopment of Traralgon Recreation Reserve is progressing well, with construction of the new flood-proof Multipurpose Pavilion underway following the demolition of the site’s long-standing, flood-prone facilities.
Federal Member for Gippsland Darren Chester said it was pleasing to see the project moving closer to completion after the previous changerooms were condemned for more than three years following the June 2021 floods.
The elevated pavilion will feature modern changerooms for football, netball, cricket, and boxing clubs, along with a kitchen, social space, and a dedicated boxing gym, delivering a significant upgrade for local sporting groups.
“The old facilities were outdated and vulnerable to flooding, and the 2021 floods highlighted the urgent need for change,” Mr Chester said.
“This redevelopment will provide modern, elevated infrastructure that can better withstand future events and serve junior and senior sportspeople for decades to come.”
Mr Chester said the pavilion would strengthen participation and community engagement across the Latrobe Valley.
“This is going to be a terrific addition to local sporting infrastructure, supporting players, volunteers and families right across the community,” he said.
The project is being managed by Latrobe City Council and delivered by local firm Langden Constructions, with funding provided through a partnership between Council and the Australian Government’s Local Roads and Community Infrastructure Program (LRCIP).
Mr Chester said the LRCIP, introduced by the former Coalition Government, had delivered tangible benefits to communities throughout Gippsland.
“The Local Roads and Community Infrastructure Program has been hugely successful across our region, funding practical, community-driven projects in towns and cities right across Gippsland,” he said.
“Unfortunately, the Albanese Government has cut the program, meaning this will be one of the final projects delivered under the scheme, which is disappointing given the real difference it has made in communities like Traralgon.
“When complete, this pavilion will stand as a long-term legacy for the Latrobe Valley and a strong example of what can be achieved when local government, community groups and local contractors work together.”
