Federal MP Darren Chester says the redeveloped Princes Highway east of Orbost was starting to take shape and would deliver long-term safety and economic benefits.

Mr Chester drove the highway this week and said the improved shoulders, overtaking lanes and new intersection design in Cann River would help save lives.

“The roundabout at the corner of Monaro and Princes highways, along with associated streetscaping and improved parking will definitely encourage people to take a break in Cann River,” Mr Chester said.

“It will help to create jobs in local businesses and improve road safety for locals and travellers.

“Too many people are killed and injured on our roads and while we all have to take responsibility for our own actions, there’s no doubt that safer roads will make a difference.”

Mr Chester secured $60 million in joint funding from the federal and state governments when he was Minister for Infrastructure.

Work is being undertaken by local firms and is expected to be completed in 2019.
