Local MP Darren Chester said the announcement of a contractor for phase two of the Macalister Irrigation District modernisation project is welcomed news.

Mr Chester said Jaydo Constructions would undertake the work to deliver the Newry pipeline.

“The $39.8 million project will ensure a major infrastructure upgrade and increase water delivery efficiency and customer service levels,” Mr Chester said.

“The latest phase of the long-term project to upgrade one of our nation’s most important food production regions will add to water savings and efficiency, improved environmental outcomes, and increase productivity for farmers.

“Southern Rural Water is managing the modernisation project with the Federal Government providing the majority of funding along with contributions from farmers and the state.

“Work will get underway in November 2022 and is expected to be complete by October 2023.

“This is a great next step in the project and the benefits will be felt in the Macalister Irrigation District and beyond.”
