Federal Member for Gippsland Darren Chester says Patties Foods’ expansion into Japan will be good for local jobs.

The Bairnsdale-based bakery last week officially launched its meat pies at a function in Tokyo to mark its entry into the Japanese market ahead of this year’s Rugby World Cup and the Tokyo Olympics in 2020.

“In February, the company debuted a new savoury pie product at the Wells Fargo Center with the support of the Philadelphia 76ers.  Now with the introduction of Patties brands into Japan, we can see how Patties is growing and taking advantage of market opportunities internationally,” Mr Chester said.

“Patties Foods is a major employer in East Gippsland with around 570 staff members. That number is expected to increase after Patties announced in February a $20 million expansion to make the Bairnsdale site the biggest savoury pie bakery in the world.

“People in Gippsland are justifiably proud of how this business has grown over the past 50 years.

“For many people, Four’n Twenty pies are as Australian as watching the footy, so there’ll be many who will be happy to see these pies being enjoyed by sports fans around the world.”
