Pensioners across Gippsland will receive an increase in their payments under the indexation of benefits this month.

The Nationals Member for Gippsland Darren Chester said maximum fortnightly pension payments would increase by $19.50 for singles and $29.60 for couples combined from September 20.

The increases will bring the maximum rate a fortnight for singles to $748.80 and $1,129.00 a fortnight for couples.

Mr Chester said the increases were critical for many older Gippslanders who are facing big increases in the cost of living.

“Pensioners are particularly exposed to the increased cost of living as everyday household items and essential services cost more,” Mr Chester said.

“Whilst the increase will be of some assistance the feedback I am receiving from pensioners across Gippsland is that more support is needed.”

Mr Chester said he had received numerous responses from pensioners to his postcard campaign to send the Prime Minister a message about the ‘carbon tax’.

“Older Gippslanders are particularly concerned about the Gillard Government’s proposed carbon tax,” Mr Chester said.

“The majority of pensioners I’ve spoken to don’t want a new tax that increases the cost of their household bills and groceries.

“Pensioners deserve a fair go and I will be continuing to make sure that they have a strong voice in Parliament.”
