Initial works have commenced on a $50 million upgrade of the Princes Highway aimed at improving safety and the visitor economy.

Federal Member for Gippsland Darren Chester, East Gippsland Shire Mayor Joe Rettino and Chief Executive Officer Gary Gaffney inspected the works in Lakes Entrance yesterday.

“It’s good to see work underway to improve visitor parking at Jemmy’s Point and road safety upgrades on The Esplanade in Lakes Entrance,” Mr Chester said.

“VicRoads has undertaken to complete some of these preliminary works prior to the Christmas rush with further projects to begin in 2018.

“This is a partnership between the Federal and State Governments with a total $50 million to be spent.

“We’re going to see improved road shoulders and safety improvements between Bairnsdale and the New South Wales border, which will benefit locals and visitors to our region.”
