FUNDING TO ASSIST MORWELL RSL SUB-BRANCH

January 8, 2009

A locally produced newsletter will continue to be available through the Morwell RSL Sub Branch after it was awarded a $12,000 Veteran and Community Grant for the purchase of a new photocopier and scanner.

The sub-branch has also been provided with $7,000 to conduct bus trips to reduce social isolation amongst local residents.

The Nationals Member for Gippsland Darren Chester said the grants were well deserved by the sub-branch and would provide benefits to local residents.

“Continuing the production of a local newsletter is a great way of bringing the local community together and keeping people in contact with each other,” Mr Chester said.

“Providing bus trips specifically for local residents also assists in bringing people together, particularly for those residents who don’t have access to their own vehicle.

“I’m sure the sub-branch will also use the grant to continue their other avenues of community work and I hope that members of the local community can take advantage of the opportunities that have been provided.”

Morwell RSL Sub-Branch President Mal Bugg said the grants have been warmly welcomed as the sub-branch is largely funded through its own fundraising activities.

“Most of our funding is provided through our own initiatives and fundraising activities so it was good news that we received the grants because it allows a little more room in our budget to support our members and the local community,” Mr Bugg said.

“We pride ourselves on keeping our members up to date and we were unable to run our next edition of the newsletter out until we were able to purchase a new copier – so that has been a big relief.

“There are also plans for our day and overnight trips to continue so our members and local residents who are unable travel on their own are able to travel to venues of interest throughout the region.”
