Work on the new synthetic hockey field and pavilion at the Gippsland Regional Sports Complex in Sale is nearing an end.

The pavilion’s external doors and windows have been installed and the cabinetry is being fitted inside, with the one of the main features – the synthetic playing surface – to be laid next month.

The Nationals Member for Gippsland Darren Chester said the site in Cobains Road had been transformed over the past year.

“When this project is finished, Sale will be home to one of the best facilities for hockey in Gippsland, which is great for our local teams. Plus, council will use the multi-purpose playing surface for social modified formats of soccer, football and hockey,” Mr Chester said.

Drouin-based A1 Civil is constructing the playing field and player shelters. Sale’s RAL Constructions built the hockey pavilion, while Clint Kelly Excavations from Montgomery secured the tender for the carpark and access road.

“This project is supporting jobs in Gippsland during the construction phase and will continue to do so also once the facility is operational,” Mr Chester said.

“This modern complex will enhance Sale’s attractiveness as a location for regional sports tournaments, drawing players, officials and their supporters from outside Gippsland.”

Wellington Shire Council mayor Caroline Crossley said work at the site had progressed smoothly with few delays.

“Wet weather hasn’t hampered work over the winter months, as often happens on projects like this. The project is expected to be finished next month,” Cr Crossley said.

“The asphalt has been laid, light towers erected, pathways completed and the external painting has been done. Work is now underway to finish off the fencing.

“We’re on schedule for the playing surface to be installed in mid-September. When the project is finished, we will have a flexible, modern, high-quality sporting facility that will cater for a wide range of needs.”

The Federal Government is contributing $600,000 toward the project, with $1.3 million from Wellington Shire Council, $1 million from the John Leslie Foundation, $650,000 from the Victorian Government and $50,000 from East Gippsland Hockey Association.
