Local residents are being urged to wage their own campaign against the global financial crisis by shopping locally and supporting local jobs.

In difficult economic times, The Nationals Member for Gippsland Darren Chester has stepped up his ‘putting locals first’ campaign in a bid to help secure local jobs.

He has coordinated a mail out to 70,000 homes across Gippsland encouraging people to shop locally and to spend their school holiday funds enjoying local tourist attractions.

“Every dollar we spend in Gippsland helps to create a job for local people,” Mr Chester said.

“Supporting local businesses means they can employ more staff and provide better training opportunities. It’s all about creating a better future for our region.”

“Never underestimate the importance of spending your money in our local community.”

Mr Chester said in many cases, small businesses were sponsors for local clubs and events.

“It is up to the local community to return the favour and support the businesses which support our towns,” he said.

“Putting locals first means making a decision to support local traders whenever possible.

“This includes participating in local school holiday activities as well as purchasing everyday items and gifts from local suppliers and traders.”
